This Month's Free DownloadStuart Townend

For this month's free sheet music download we are offering 'To see the King of heaven fall (Gethsemane Hymn)' by Stuart Townend & Keith Getty

Stuart is known and respected around the world as one of the leading worship songwriters of his generation. The depth of lyrical and theological content in songs such as In Christ alone, How deep the Father’s love, The power of the cross and Beautiful Saviour have caused some to draw comparisons with the greats of previous generations such as Watts and Wesley; while the marriage of great lyrics with wonderfully accessible melodies (largely through his successful writing partnership with Keith Getty) means his songs bridge different musical and cultural genres, and reach into every corner of the globe.

Story behind the song by Stuart Townend

“As with most of the songs I have written with Keith Getty, Gethsemane started with a melody he
sent me. We had discussed many times our desire to write songs that narrated and explored
particular moments in the life of Christ, and I felt this melody had a particular haunting depth
and power, and I began to think about that night before Jesus’ death, spent praying in the
Garden of Gethsemane.

It’s a moment in His life that we may tend to gloss over, or perhaps even be a little perplexed
by: Why was the prospect of the cross so terrible to Him? OK, nobody wants to die horribly, but
many before and since have gone to martyrdom with a song on their lips. What was the root of
Christ’s anguish?

I had a few years before heard a powerful explanation from C.J. Mahaney: at the core of His
suffering was not the prospect of death; it was the prospect of bearing the weight and the curse
of every sin that has ever been committed, and its dreadful consequence – complete and
utter separation from His loving Father. A place of such darkness, such isolation, such evil, such
torture, that words and thoughts cannot begin to describe it. And yet that’s what the Son of God
chose to suffer – for us.

Viewed in this light, it becomes an important part of understanding the unfathomable depths of
His sacrifice, and the true cost of the cross..” – Stuart Townend

TO SEE THE KING OF HEAVEN FALL
In anguish to His knees,
The Light and Hope of all the world
Now overwhelmed with grief.
What nameless horrors must He see,
To cry out in the garden:
“Oh, take this cup away from me –
Yet not my will but Yours,
Yet not my will but Yours.”

To know each friend will fall away,
And heaven’s voice be still,
For hell to have its vengeful day
Upon Golgotha’s hill.
No words describe the Saviour’s plight -
To be by God forsaken
Till wrath and love are satisfied
And every sin is paid
And every sin is paid

What took Him to this wretched place,
What kept Him on this road?
His love for Adam’s curséd race,
For every broken soul.
No sin too slight to overlook,
No crime too great to carry,
All mingled in this poisoned cup –
And yet He drank it all,
The Saviour drank it all,
The Saviour drank it all.
